National coaches repaced with Aussies meets mixed results

AS A reaction to some of our sporting teams struggling on the world stage, three overseas national team coaches have been sacked and replaced with Australians.

Ewen McKenzie took over the Wallabies from New Zealander, Robbie Deans and so far he has not been able to turn their fortunes around.

Darren Lehmann was given the job with the Aussie cricketers after the bitter break-up with South African, Mickey Arthur.

While losing the one day series in India his biggest test is still to come when we take on the English in the upcoming Ashes Series.

While our Socceroos qualified for the World Cup next year, two six-nil thrashings in friendly matches saw German, Holger Osieck being shown the door.

Melbourne Victory and former Brisbane Roar coach, Ange Postecoglou has been given the job of turning the team's fortunes around. While Postecoglou was born in Greece, he migrated to Australia with his family as a five-year-old and grew up in Melbourne.

He played 193 games for South Melbourne in the NSL as well as representing Australia on four occasions.

After moving into coaching, he became one of the most successful in Australia winning two premierships each with South Melbourne and the Brisbane Roar.

Ange is going to need all that experience as well as the support of the players and all involved with the national team to ensure we are not a bit of a joke at the World Cup.

His first test will come when Australia takes on Costa Rica in Sydney on Tuesday, November 19.

This will be a stern test for the Socceroos as Costa Rica has moved up the rankings to 31 while our team has slipped four places to 57.

There have been a number changes made to play this match with a number of the veteran players left out.

Long-time keeper, 41-year-old Mark Schwarzer, decided to call it quits after 109 games with the national team.

Whether he was pushed or just decided to go out while he was on top certainly gives former ATW keeper, Mitch Langerak a great opportunity.

I note that APN Football columnist, Phil Dillon under his pseudonym "Offside" and I can assure him that is just what he is with the local football fans.

He has gone for Mathew Ryan as a replacement for Schwarzer and not our Mitch even though Langerak has started in goal in the last two matches.

To the SMS contributor, "Makesense" it is obvious you have never heard of Bundaberg's Josh Brillante who played for the Socceroos in the recent Asian Cup.
